British Gypsum has introduced a new 2,300mm length board as a standard option on tapered edge 12.5mm Gyproc WallBoard, as an alternative to the traditional 2,400mm size. The new length has been designed to help housebuilders reduce waste and save time on site, by reducing the need to cut the boards to size and discard of unwanted material.
While the potential waste reduction opportunities of shorter plasterboard have previously been identified, a lack of standardisation in terms of floor-to-ceiling heights has made it difficult to agree a commonly accepted length.
The new size is a result of British Gypsum’s collaboration with major housebuilders, particularly Barratt Developments, to gain a consensus and prove the business case for a specific industry standard shorter plasterboard.
Following a successful trial with Barratt Developments, British Gypsum has launched the 2,300mm length as a standard option on tapered edge 12.5mm Gyproc WallBoard. Based on its trial, Barratt Developments has estimated that switching to the 2,300mm plasterboard will reduce its annual waste by at least 1,200 tonnes.
In addition to the new 2,300mm boards, housebuilders can also work directly with British Gypsum to create bespoke plasterboard sizes, for orders over a minimum quantity.
The move to a smaller size of plasterboard forms part of British Gypsum’s wider commitment to sustainable building, by minimising waste as well as reducing pallet requirements to transport the products.

Excellent idea for Dry Lining and tacking stud work.
However! Not good for tacking ceilings as floor joists, trusses and mf ceilings are set out at 600 mm 400mm centres.
Gypsum need to go back to the drawing board and rethink and whilst your there, reduce the size and weight of the sound block and fire line boards.
As an experienced finishing trade of 30yrs my opinion is that no board should weigh any more than a bag of plaster.
Some years ago the weight and size of plaster bags was reduced for health and safety reasons but plaster boards have become heavier and denser. It’s no good saying that board work is a two man job because it isn’t and many trades work alone.

And have not used tapered edged boards for years as it eliminates board joints , square edge could not come quick enough because it’s just caused us more problems
Good idea but wrong conception. Most plasterboard walls we come across as is the industry standard for house/ flat building are above 2400mm. The new size that should be considered is 2500mm as everyone is having to buy 2700mm boards wasting around a 200mm offcut which generates most waste on site. This needs to be on all ranges of board type including the Soundbloc. Although BG states they will create bespoke sizes they add around 10% to the price to accomidate
