In a very similar way to how the rock carving was achieved in clip 5, old and new brick effects can be created using a similar procedure. In this example we are producing a new brick effect with staggered mortar joints.

Unlike all the other Wallcrete patterns and effects where the quality of the finished trowelled surface has very little importance, or value, quite the opposite is the case when producing a flat brick wall as a wall with lumps and bumps does not look good! But, for a person with plastering or rendering experience, this should still be a very easy part of the Wallcrete process.

So, when creating a brick effect wall, firstly, a base coat of grey coloured Wallcrete is applied at 5-10mm (this will become the mortar joint colour). Then, while the base coat is still soft, a top coat of red coloured Wallcrete is applied at about 2mm. The wall, which is now totally red in colour is then sprayed with liquid release agent and then textured, in this case, using a travertine effect textured skin.

The Wallcrete is then left to set a little and when ready, the mortar joints are then carefully marked out and then carved using a brick carving tool, running along a straight edge, to expose the grey colour of the base coat which then forms the mortar joint effect. When the joints are carved, as with the ‘normal’ Wallcrete designs, the joints are lightly brushed with a small paint brush.

Finally, to add another dimension and even more realism, a few of the ‘bricks’ are coloured using the Wallstains to create a truly realistic brick wall effect.

An older brick appearance can be achieved by applying the top (red) coat to a greater depth. This gives a deeper joint and therefore an older brick effect and in addition, when the bricks are carved more deeply there is a tendency for corners of some of the bricks to break away and fall off, all of which adds to the effect.

A little more material is therefore used to achieve an old brick effect, and a bit more time is needed to carve through the thicker red layer, but it’s certainly the way to achieve an old brick effect.
