High performance monocouche render by Saint-Gobain Weber has been used on a stylish contemporary development by Cotswold Homes Limited, Gloucester. The boutique collection of five three-storey homes at Horizon, Clevedon, command captivating views of the sea and Britain’s only Grade 1 listed pier.
Cotswold Homes bought the land, previously recreational land for a local convent, with planning permission in place for the 1500 sq ft properties in Lea Grove Road, a traditional streetscape of Victorian properties. Designs were modified by Cotswold’s own management team to ensure the homes of steel frame construction gained maximum light and internal space.
Mark Pickthall of M P Plastering, Burnham-on-Sea, Bristol, specified the use of weber.pral M for Cotswold Homes. “I have used Weber renders for over ten years and it’s the only brand we work with,” says Mark. “The Horizon properties were designed with crisp, contemporary lines so weber.pral M in Chalk was selected to complement this minimalist style which blends perfectly with the surrounding landscape. weber.pral M is hardwearing and very low maintenance which is ideal in this area of high exposure close to the sea.”
weber.pral M is BBA approved and offers the multiple benefits of pump application and through-colour One Coat Technology which are recognised for their contribution to minimising programme works. By reducing the drying time by as much as 50%, when compared with a traditional two-coat system, on-site labour is dramatically reduced contributing to project efficiencies and faster completion.
“The location proved to be a challenge in a highly restricted residential area,” continues Mark, “so speed was of prime importance. weber.pral M is quick and easy to apply and spray application ensured we kept ahead of programme targets over a tight eight-week build.” A scraped finish has achieved an attractive decorative and durable finish. Careful site management by Cotswold Homes under the Considerate Constructors Scheme enhanced neighbourhood relationships where health and safety was paramount.
Saint-Gobain Weber is the first manufacturer of monocouche renders to be awarded an A+ rating as defined in the BRE Global 2008 Green Guide to Specification. This audited material helps specifiers to make selections that will collectively reduce the environmental impact of their buildings while achieving a higher number of BREEAM materials specifications credits.
“Despite its contemporary elevations, Horizon blends beautifully with the period properties opposite and behind,” says Terri Hayes-Pugh, sales manager, Cotswold Homes. “Although the design of Horizon was initially a concern to existing homeowners, the street scene is attractive, and from many of the historic viewpoints in Clevedon, these properties are almost unnoticeable due to careful planning of roof heights and colour palette.”
These high specification four-bedroom properties, which provide open plan living; a top floor master suite with French doors to a sun terrace and views of the sea; and walk-in closets and luxurious kitchens, were mostly reserved off-plan and all were occupied immediately upon completion.
weber.pral M, a ready mixed, cementitious render is manufactured from carefully selected raw materials at facilities in Bedfordshire, Shropshire and Ireland where quality and consistency is achieved. It requires only the addition of clean water on site and is formulated for efficient spray application over large areas by render pump. It can be used on most suitably prepared brick and blockwork and offers a variety of ways to achieve distinct, architectural features.
